EYE MOVEMENT DESENSITIZATION & REPROCESSING

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is an evidence-based, trauma-focused therapy that helps your brain reprocess painful memories so they lose their grip, often in fewer sessions than traditional talk therapy. I offer EMDR therapy in person in South Bend and online to women throughout Indiana, including Granger, Mishawaka, and Notre Dame.

You don't need to discuss the event in detail or do homework between sessions. EMDR lets your brain engage its own natural healing process.

HOW IT HELPS

How EMDR Therapy Can Help

Reduce Emotional DistressEMDR helps lower the emotional intensity associated with distressing memories, making them less overwhelming.
Process Traumatic MemoriesIt helps you work through and make sense of painful experiences by integrating them more healthily.
Shift Negative BeliefsEMDR helps shift negative beliefs and perceptions about oneself that have developed from past traumas.
Improve Emotional Regulation It improves your ability to manage and respond to emotions in a balanced way.
Enhance Coping SkillsEMDR can strengthen coping mechanisms and resilience, aiding in better handling of future stressors.
Restore Personal Strengths It helps you tap into your inner strengths that may have been overshadowed by trauma.
Promote Overall Well-beingBy addressing and resolving past trauma, EMDR supports improved mental health and overall life satisfaction.
Facilitate Self-AwarenessIt encourages greater self-awareness and understanding of how past experiences influence current behavior and emotions.

EMDR is designed to address unprocessed traumatic memories. When we face a stressful or traumatic event, the body mobilizes to protect itself: fight, flight, or freeze. Normally, it settles back into rest afterward. But when the body never completes that protective action, it can stay in high activation, as if the danger is still happening.

"EMDR helps the brain revisit and complete the processing of past memories."

Unlike therapies that target changing your thoughts or behaviors directly, EMDR lets your brain engage its own natural healing, often in fewer sessions, offering a more focused path to relief.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, commonly known as EMDR, is a therapy specifically designed to address unprocessed traumatic memories. When exposed to a stressful (or traumatic event), cortisol increases and our bodies respond with a mobilized response of feeling, moving, running, protecting, and shaking (fight/flight). Cortisol levels return to baseline, and the body relaxes into a rest and digest state. However, when the body doesn't get to complete the action necessary to stay safe, it remains in high activation as if the distressing event is ongoing. EMDR therapy helps the brain revisit and complete the processing of memories from past events

In EMDR therapy, you need not discuss the issue in great detail or complete additional assignments between sessions. Unlike other therapies that target changing your emotions, thoughts, or behaviors linked to these issues, EMDR allows your brain to naturally engage in its healing process. For some clients, EMDR often requires fewer sessions compared to other psychotherapies, offering a more focused and potentially faster resolution to their concerns.

  • You may revisit distressing memories, but the goal is to reduce their emotional impact, not to relive the trauma in an overwhelming way. We work in a controlled, supportive environment.

  • Yes. EMDR can be used in conjunction with other therapies or medications, and pairs well with IFS and the Safe and Sound Protocol.

  • Yes: I offer EMDR virtually to women throughout Indiana, so you can do this work from home.

  • You'll briefly bring up a memory while following gentle bilateral stimulation, like guided eye movements. Most people find it far less intense than retelling the story in detail.
